Conservation and Ecosystem Management: Pest Animals

Our responsibilities under the Parks Victoria Act 1998 are to manage the State’s parks, reserves, waterways and other public land including a representative system of terrestrial and marine national parks and marine sanctuaries. It is also the Local Port Manager for Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and Port Campbell and the Waterway Manager for the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers.

The Mammal Survey Group of Victoria (MSGV) is an incorporated non-profit volunteer group that undertakes field surveys of mammals and other vertebrate fauna throughout Victoria, including birds, reptiles and frogs.

Discover Victoria's wonderful mammal fauna of 139 species. Find out their names, what they look like, what they eat, how they breed and where and when you can go to see them. As it is not uncommon to find a mammal skull in the bush, you can now identify it by viewing skull images of every Victorian mammal. Also find out what mammals Victoria has lost through extinction and what is now being done to protect the remaining fauna. In addition, you can view the wonderful prints from John Gould's Australian Mammals done in the 1860's.

Pests, diseases and weeds are a constant risk for primary producers, as they can have a serious impact on agricultural production and market access.The department provides information on the prevention, management and treatment of these pests, diseases and weeds.

An invasive species is a species occurring, as a result of human activities, beyond its accepted normal distribution and which threatens valued environmental, agricultural or other social resources by the damage it causes. Invasive species have a major impact on Australia's environment, threatening our unique biodiversity and reducing overall species abundance and diversity.
